    Angry

I've been having a starting problem with my JRSC 6psi 99 civic si. specs hereIn fact my girlfriend borrowed the car for the first time today only to get stranded 50 miles from home, and i had to go rescue her.
Problem I have is ill be driving, come to a stop, and when i try to go it stutters, and stalls. Then I can sit there and crank all day and it wont start again.

Then magically... an undetermined period of time later (1minute - 1 hour) ill crank it while working the throttle and it comes to life.

my car is not heavily modified.. im running the stock ignition system for the most part, stock injectors but upgraded fuel otherwise..vafc, but not tweaked at all..

im stumped..plugs are good. fuel pressure is good. i thought the spark was good, but who knows..

i cant help but think it somehow contributed to by the lightened flywheel. dunno.. i dont like this problem sneaking up on me though. although its only happened 3 times in the last 3000 miles.

Perhaps the coil? They can go bad in a way so that they stop working when hot.

    Red face

I'm willing to bet is is a loose wire on your VFAC or an associated electronic component...

Good call (I've been stung by that before)... frown

Another thing you might want to consider is your main relay...
When the car won't start, when you first turn the key to the run position, listen for a good (audible) click from under the drivers side of the dash, when the check engine light goes out (approx. 2 secs.)...

If the check engine light just goes out and you don't hear a good click, the car more than likely won't start... cool

    BTW: Greg's right too...
But you can test my diagnosis with your ear... biggrin

    Thumbs up

went out this morning and the car would crank but not turn over at all.

as for the VAFC or other theory, I had the same problem once before the vafc went in.

im thinking its electrical. i have a full msd (6al, cap, coil) setup in the garage waiting to go in. ill see if that resolves it. need to relocate the battery to the trunk first.

but i will go out and listen for that relay. i dont recall ever hearing it though.

That's kinda confusing (hence Chuck's post)...
I think he mean't it turned over but didn't start (fire)... cool

    im mixing up my terminology.

    Ok... it will not "crank".

Battery post will do that, starter connection, etc. etc...

Even though you may get indicators to come on, a weak connection can restrict flow of current to high load devices (namely starter).

Check out all the hi-amp cables and their connectors.

    Unhappy

my car is doing the exact same thing - i just ordered a new underdash main harness - but I would like to avoid ripping my dash off. I am already running an MSD 6a and Coil. Thought it might be the ignitor - so i got a new one - no luck frown You guys think it might be the coil? All of the cables look ok - and I get a spark from the plug when i remove it from the engine. All i get is backfiring and the engine wont start. Thanks for your help!

    Lightbulb

    Killerbee:

In a case like yours I would probably suspect an ignition rotor that is shorting to ground (thru the dist shaft)...

Even a weak spark will fire a plug when removed from the demands of compression...
However when it is reinstalled, the cylinder pressure is great enough to allow the spark to find an easier path to ground...

BTW: Insure that your rotor is properly secured to the distributor shaft, and that your cam timing has not jumped... cool
